Welcome back to the San Francisco Bar Pilots newsletter! Despite U.S. tariffs and a USTR fee ensnaring international trade and increasing the volatility of the global supply chain, the Bar Pilots, alongside our port partners, have been hard at work – covering 160 miles of pilotage routes, 1,000 miles of shoreline, and over 200 docks and maritime facilities – ensuring that the Bay Area’s ports, as well as the Ports of Stockton and West Sacramento, continue to serve all calling vessels with maximum efficiency and navigational safety.

As we close out 2023, the San Francisco Bar Pilots approach our 174th year of operation. Our organization has managed to change and evolve over the years, pivoting from sail-powered pilot schooners until the 1970’s to state-of-the-art pilot boats.

The San Francisco Bar Pilots recently partnered with CBS Bay Area and the Pasha Group for a cutting-edge, virtual reality news story. The story captures a first-hand glimpse of a “day in the life” of a San Francisco Bar Pilot by following Captain Zack Kellerman as he navigates a ship through the Bay.
