As we close out 2023, the San Francisco Bar Pilots approach our 174th year of operation. Our organization has managed to change and evolve over the years, pivoting from sail-powered pilot schooners until the 1970’s to state-of-the-art pilot boats.

AB 2056 Addresses Fundamental Issues with the Bar Pilot’s Revenue Structure

Sacramento, CA – After a multi-year effort to reach a consensus, the San Francisco Bar Pilots, Pacific Merchant Shipping Association, Cruise Lines International Association, and Western States Petroleum Association have agreed to a comprehensive package of solutions aimed at addressing longstanding revenue issues facing the pilotage system through Assembly Bill 2056 (AB 2056) authored by Assemblymember Timothy Grayson.

Earlier this month, the San Francisco Bar Pilots were swiftly dispatched to the emergency scene of a four-alarm fire that broke out at the Port of Benicia. Our pilots safely maneuvered three ships from the berth and out of danger, allowing fireboats to reach and battle the flames directly from the water.
