Welcome back to the San Francisco Bar Pilots newsletter! Despite the extreme turbulence in international trade over the last few months, the Bar Pilots remain committed to providing service every day of the year to the many vessels that transit in and out of the San Francisco Bay and its associated waterways.

This year marks a momentous occasion for the Bar Pilots, as our organization is celebrating 175 years of serving the State of California, protecting the environment, and coordinating the flow of trade. This milestone is only possible due to the scores of Bar Pilots who, since 1850, have served on the San Francisco waterfront, and our current roster of pilots are proud to be carrying the torch for the pilots that came before them. Keep an eye out for an event later this year that will properly celebrate the Bar Pilots reaching this milestone – we’re really looking forward to it.

As we head into the summer months, the Bar Pilots, along with countless businesses, agencies, and governments, will continue to closely monitor how the United States’ recent tariffs impact global trade, particularly the number of vessels calling the Port of Oakland from Asia. Both SFBP and the California Board of Pilot Commissioners are 100% funded by fees paid by ships that call in our region’s ports, and any volatility in vessel traffic can have a significant impact on pilotage operations and oversight. The current administration’s actions have caused massive ripple effects throughout the global supply chain, and SFBP continues to carefully monitor the situation while working closely with the Port of Oakland and other regional stakeholders to keep the Bay Area a hub for maritime commerce for years to come.

State Legislature Commemorates SFBP’s 175th Anniversary

Last month, San Francisco Bar Pilots leadership joined Assemblymembers Lori Wilson, Catherine Stefani, and Matt Haney at the State Capitol to receive a resolution from the California legislature honoring the Bar Pilots’ 175th anniversary. We are incredibly appreciative of the Assemblymembers as well as Senators Tim Grayson, Jesse Arreguín, and Scott Wiener for their work in recognizing the Bar Pilots on such an incredible milestone. Our work with the California Legislature has been extremely rewarding in recent years, and we look forward to building more relationships in the Capitol and continuing to move the maritime industry forward.

Community Engagement

Capt. Jesse Pullin continues to lead the Bar Pilots’ Outreach Committee as our organization seeks to teach more local students about a potential career on the water. Over the last few months, Capt. Pullin has attended career fairs at both James Lick Middle School and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School, even hosting a class of students from James Lick in May for a ride along on a pilot vessel. These experiences open the door for young students who may never have thought about a potential maritime career path before, and our pilots look forward to meeting even more students and educating them about the benefits of a life on the water.

BOPC Recognizes Capt. Einar Nyborg

Congratulations to Capt. Einar Nyborg, who was recognized earlier this year by the California Board of Pilot Commissioners for his two decades of service on the commission, most recently completing eight years of service as a commissioner. Capt. Nyborg’s knowledge of the San Francisco Bay and his years of piloting experience have been invaluable to the Board and to SFBP, and we look forward to seeing him continue to be a mainstay on the waterfront.

Capt. Nyborg was awarded his Certificate of Appreciation by Karen Tynan, President of the Board of Pilot Commissioners.
