Port Partners

The Bar Pilots have a close working relationship with each of our nine port partners and regularly provide technical expertise and practical support. Below are some facts about each of the nine ports we serve.

While the Bar Pilots are typically seen navigating large ships through the San Francisco Bay, the Monterey Bay was added to the San Francisco pilotage grounds in 2001. Though Monterey is not a large commercial port like others that the Bar Pilots serve, the location hosts several cruise ships throughout the year, which boosts economic activity across Monterey’s waterfront.

The Port of Stockton is accessible from the San Francisco Bay via the San Joaquin River. The port is currently working closely with the Bar Pilots on a dredging project that will double its throughput volume by 2026.

The Bar Pilots have served the Port of Sacramento since 1984, navigating ships up and down the Sacramento River between the port and the San Francisco Bay. As the fourth busiest port in California, the Bar Pilots play a crucial role in helping move ships in and out of the Bay and contributing to the local supply chain.

The Port of Benicia, a mere 24 miles from the Golden Gate Bridge, is known for its cargo of automobiles and petroleum coke due to the demand of cars in California and the close proximity to the City of Benicia’s refineries. In April of this year, a fire at the port pulled the Bar Pilots into action, where several Pilots maneuvered ships away from danger and allowed fireboats to put out the flames. The Bar Pilots look forward to the continued partnership with the Port of Benicia and the many maritime entities that utilize it.
