PROTECTING THE ENVIRONMENT
The San Francisco Bar Pilots’ jurisdiction includes more than 1,000 miles of coastline and 90 percent of the state’s marshlands. The region is home to some of the world’s best fishing, tourism, and recreational opportunities serving tens of millions of visitors annually. The Bar Pilots work closely with many organizations to make sure the region’s environment is preserved and protected, including the following:
- United States Coast Guard
- United States Army Corps of Engineers
- California Department of Fish and Game – Office of Oil Spill Prevention and Response
- Harbor Safety Committee of the San Francisco Bay Region
- National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)
- Monterey Bay Aquarium and Research Institute (MBARI)
SUPPORTING THE CALIFORNIA ECONOMY
Working closely with the ports, the United States Coast Guard, shipping companies and tugboat operators, the San Francisco Bar Pilots provide service to over 4,000 ships annually. Maritime trade in the San Francisco Bay has an overall economic value of more than $1.2 billion per day. This trade supports tens of thousands of California workers and helps deliver goods throughout the state and much of the nation. More than $35 billion in imports and $15 billion in exports each year can be attributed directly to ports served by the Bar Pilots.
