The San Francisco Bar Pilots are proud to serve as the inaugural sponsor for the Sea Lion Center at Pier 39. The center features a display that shows how bar pilots board ships in San Francisco Bay and at sea to help navigate the safe passage of vessel traffic. Bar pilots also volunteer at the center to speak with visitors and school children about their maritime careers.

The pilots share a common mission to protect the water quality and marine life of San Francisco Bay. Since 1850, the San Francisco Bar Pilots have been providing expert navigation services to ensure the safe passage of shipping traffic. Many of our members are sailors, surfers and conservationists. Through the Sea Lion Center, residents and visitors alike can learn about the Bay’s ecosystem and how to preserve this important waterway.
